Barry Porter, Regional Executive for the American Red Cross explained “US Military officials requested that the American Red Cross provide volunteers with French and Creole language skills to help medical staff with translation. In identifying possible volunteers from our area, we all immediately thought of Alex.”
Red Cross volunteers around the world spend hours training, working in their local Red Cross affiliate, and responding to local emergencies every day. They do so knowing that the need for disaster relief is just as great for a local family that has just suffered a home fire, as it is for any other disaster. But many of them, like Alex, also know that a time will come when their specific skills, languages and connections will be needed, and that they will be among the few who will be able to fill the need.

About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation's blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
