National Weather Service www.nws.noaa.gov will promote National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Weather Radio; show instruments used to gather weather information, including a weather balloon; safely create small, controlled lighting bolts using a Vandergraff generator; and hand out activity books for children, tracking maps, flood and safety brochures.
Bayou Rescue http://www.bayourescue.org Bayou Rescue is a non-profit organization that was initially formed in response to the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Bayou Rescue supports the animal rescue efforts of existing animal welfare organizations located in disaster areas, or that set up temporary shelter operations to care for displaced pets in emergencies. Our mission is accomplished by: providing volunteer teams to emergency rescue/shelter sites in disaster areas; collecting and transporting emergency supplies needed to rescue and care for animals after a disaster; and transporting animals to safe foster and adoptive homes, or to reunite pets with their people when possible
NC Canine Emergency Response Team www.nccert.org Committed to the goal of providing highly skilled search and rescue teams 24 hours a day, NC C.E.R.T. responds to requests from law enforcement agencies and emergency management agencies, during natural or man made disasters, structure and building collapse, drownings, and lost persons in urban and wilderness settings, at no cost to the requesting agency.
Central Carolina Skywarn www.ccskywarn.net will show a fully operational ham radio station setup, showing how it receives vital weather reports from trained spotters in 18 counties, and relaying them to the National Weather Service in a timely and accurate manner.
Storm Education Team www.stormstudy.com will exhibit two large vans used to gather weather information and report findings to the National Hurricane Center radio room. Both are equipped with weather instruments and communications gear. One is primarily used to gather weather data, however, and the other is primarily a communications vehicle containing radio communications, remote repeaters, and wireless Internet equipment.
Safe Kids Wake County works to prevent accidental childhood injury, the leading killer of children 14 and under. Safe Kids Wake County is a member of Safe Kids Worldwide, a global network of organizations dedicated to preventing accidental injury. Safe Kids Wake County was founded in 1996 and is led by WakeMed Health & Hospitals. The Safe Kids Buckle Up program was created in 1996 with support from General Motors.
Wake County Amateur Radio Emergency Service www.wakeares.org (ARES - the Amateur Radio Emergency Service) will allow children to talk on radios. ARES provides backup communications when other systems fail or become overloaded, through volunteer amateur radio operators working with state and county emergency management agencies, the Red Cross, and utilities such as Progress Energy.
Wake County CERT www.wakecountycert.org Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Program educates people about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. Using the training learned in the classroom and during exercises, CERT members can assist others in their neighborhood or workplace following an event when professional responders are not immediately available to help.
Wake County Emergency Medical Services EMS is a County-operated, third service provider of emergency medical services. The organization began operation on July 1, 1976, and celebrated its 30th year of service in 2006. Wake County EMS is the largest of seven agencies comprising the Wake County EMS System, and the sole public-sector provider.
WakeMed Air Mobile transports people injured in traffic accidents, as well as stroke patients, sick infants and others with life-threatening illnesses to medical centers where they can get specialists' care. The state of the art air ambulance is expected to make 530 flights in its first year. WakeMed worked for three years to establish an air ambulance program, which required approval from the state. The hospital expects about 40 percent of its flights to serve patients in Wake County. Forty-two percent would come from Sampson, Harnett, Wilson, Wayne, Nash, Johnston, Franklin and Lee counties.
Wake Interfaith Disaster Team is composed of members of many faith groups throughout Wake County. We are committed to respond to disasters, primarily in Wake County, but elsewhere if called upon. Formed in 2003, during disasters Interfaith Disaster teams provides advocacy and referrals to meet the needs of affected families, coordinates volunteers, and provides spiritual care for those in need.
North Carolina National Guard www.nc.ngb.army.mil can be called to the front lines of any disaster, will provide information about the more than 6,000 citizen soldiers and airmen of the North Carolina National Guard on federal active duty deployed around the state, the nation, and in harm's way overseas.
Food Bank of North Carolina www.foodbanknc.org is a non-profit organization that provides food to people at risk of hunger in 34 counties in central and eastern North Carolina. The Food Bank distributes millions of pounds of food to more than 860 partner agencies including soup kitchens, food pantries, shelters, and after school programs for children.
